Through the Years

2015

A year after the tragedy, grassroots organizations in Isla Vista and the greater Goleta area arose to further memorialize the victims.

One such organization, BlUnite IV, distributed blue LED tealights to students and local businesses.

Pardall Tunnel saw motion-activated LED light strips added, lighting the path from campus to IV. The space is part of art installation “Hesperus is Phosphorus: Light Passages” by art professors Kim Yasuda and Marcos Novak.

Graduate student Melissa Barthelemy organized a collection of artifacts and memorial pieces in a self-guided experience in the Old Gym called We Remember Them: Acts of Love and Compassion in Isla Vista.

UCSB alumnus Jordan Killebrew fundraised over $7,000 for Project IV Love, an effort to utilize empty space in People’s Park to construct a community memorial garden. With locally sourced materials and many volunteers, the IV Love and Remembrance Garden came to fruition. Six benches for the six victims remain to this day.

2016

In November 2016, Isla Vista residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of the formation of the Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD), emerging as a response to the urgent need for local governance and community representation.

Professor Kim Yasuda created LightWorks as an extension of the light display installed at Pardall Center in 2015. LightWorks involved light-centric art pieces created by multiple artists, some students in the Art Department at UCSB.
